Bray Wyatt's Ambulance Match Win Will Kick-Start a Hot Streak

On the first Monday Night Raw of 2015, Bray Wyatt defeated Dean Ambrose in the first ever Ambulance match to take place on the flagship show. The match saw both stars produce the aggressive, brutal exchange that fans have become accustomed to when The Eater of Worlds meets the Lunatic Fringe, with one significant caveat: After Ambrose’s usual high-risk repertoire, Wyatt hit him with two Sister Abigails for a rare clean win.

This was a decisive moment not just in the two’s feud, but also the career projection of Bray Wyatt heading into WrestleMania XXXI. It was made clear in the buildup to the fixture that this match would represent the end—for now at least—between the two. In an interview with Michael Cole that you can see below, Dean Ambrose predicted that “whether it’s me or him, it’s gonna be over.” He also mentioned that the feud had served as a distraction, effectively ruling a line under the rivalry for the time being. The feud began with a sneak attack by Wyatt at Hell in a Cell last October, and this underhandedness has been consistent in their rivalry to date, but that changed when Wyatt weathered the storm to deliver two effective finishers to Ambrose and take down the match. There is one logical reason to such a clean, finite end to the saga; Wyatt is about to embark on a hot streak that will see him enter WrestleMania as a force to be reckoned with.

Discussion of The Undertaker’s opponent at WrestleMania is a source of hot debate. First, Sting told the world in no uncertain terms that he had his eye on a dream match with The Deadman, as per Wrestling Inc. After this, the appearance of the Phenom was thrown into doubt when Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst made comments alluding to his poor health, as reported by Uproxx. This uncertainty has never quite been quashed with contrasting reports from various sources citing Bray Wyatt as another prospective matchup at the year’s showpiece event, as reported by Wrestlezone, leaving Sting to face Triple H following their bust-up at Survivor Series.Taking on Dean Ambrose has changed this. The excellent chemistry enjoyed between the two saw them race to the top of the card at TLC 2014, even if the cartoonish ending left some viewers unsatisfied. Overall, the two’s performances have been lauded over, as evidenced by the repeated bookings and increased promotional time they have picked up.

With such an accomplished back-and-forth, it is only a matter of time before the two lock horns again. But for now at least, they will each have a new path carved out for them approaching WrestleMania. For Wyatt, this will be one of dominance and destruction. In the ensuing three months, we can expect Wyatt to follow his usual pattern of honing in on targets, playing mind games and escalating the feud to volatile heights. The difference now will be a lesser reliance on cheap tactics and distractions, with an emphasis on clean wins and what a certain superstar would refer to as “ruthless aggression.”

The final destination of Wyatt’s road to WrestleMania is not yet determined, but the journey will be one which sees him embark on an attention-grabbing hot streak the likes of which he has yet to enjoy in his WWE career.
