One of the last major travesties of the wrestling industry was remedied Monday night as WWE announced ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage will be the first inductee for the 2015 Hall of Fame classSavage was one of the greatest wrestlers ever and embodied the heart and spirit that the sport is all about. With unparalleled skill in the ring for his time, in addition to a personality that made him a larger-than-life character, 'Macho Man' thrilled fans throughout his 30-plus year career in WWF, WCW and TNA.
When asked by Stone Cold Steve Austin on the WWE Network about if and when Savage would get into the Hall of Fame, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon was blunt with his answer, via Joe Nguyen of The Denver Post, “Oh absolutely. Definitely. I’d say soon. I’m not so sure if it’s this year but soon.”
As a two-time WWE champion, four time WCW world heavyweight champion, one-time Intercontinental Champion and 1987 King of the King winner, Savage has the resume to be a first-ballot inductee. After watching Bruno Sammartino and The Ultimate Warrior enter the Hall of Fame and Sting make his WWE debut at Survivor Series in November, many of the complaints wrestling fans had with WWE over the years have now been recognized and answered.
Championships only tell half the story with Savage, but his long-term influence on pop culture and the reach he had beyond wrestling made him an iconic figure of the 1980s and 90s. More than 20 years after his last stint with the WWE, Savage finally gets his rightful spot in the Hall of Fame.
